The role of root an tuber crop in Africa food security issues and rural poverty reduction is important. I am really concerned about ways to further harness the potential of these crops for the benefits of the smallholder farmers. My concern arose from wake of other challenges as high production cost, market access, access to input, need for mechanization of production and removal of drudgery. Possibly, we need to think about the development of new product from yam, although its production is yet to be excessive as yield level at the smallholder farmers field is still low.
Being a contributor to IITA yam program at the smallest subordinate level in the past (1989-200). I strongly feel that the technologies developed from these laudable efforts is not so visible on the smallholders farmers field. Possibly we meed to explore the innovation systems approach to develop our research subject, such that our focus will be demand driven. With this we will reach more people and generate innovation that will benefit ARD stakeholder.
Best regards to the great mentor..Dr. Robert.
