The insect collection at IITA-Benin was initiated by G.G. some 16 years ago, and meanwhile it belongs to the four most considerable collections of the Afrotropical region. It contains a lot of type specimens and undescribed species of all groups. Probably, it is the worldwide best maintained documentation of the West African diversity of insects. This article is demonstrating that such a research collection is very valuable in support of tropical agriculture, pest management and conservation of Afrotropical biodiversity, here especially for West Africa.
