The success (or failure) of organic bananas from Africa all boils down to consumer preferences. And as a consumer, why would I buy organic bananas from Africa instead of, say, from Asia? Are there added values to it? The article doesn't really touch on this basic issue. If I am going to put in my hard-earned cash into buying one of these African organic bananas then I expect something extra out of it, otherwise I would just go and pick my usual Cavendish from China.

I'm unqualified to comment, but clearly lots of people are reading this and not doing so, so I may as well start! Nice article, though I'd like to hear more on potential solutions to all these challenges (guess there was limited space here) especially in terms of addressing the problems of "scattered, small-scale production"

Also, what research has been done into the potential market for different types of banana? In Europe you can't currently buy much besides 'cavendish' bananas. Could there be a broader niche there - organic / fairtrade or otherwise?
